Dermaplaning…What Is It?

In the world of skin care, products, and procedures, it can be hard to keep up with ever changing fads and gimmicks.  By the time we hear about the latest and greatest treatment, it’s been cast aside for the next big thing.  If you are one to follow celebrities or beauty moguls, one treatment isn’t budging.  Dermaplaning is all the rave and it doesn’t appear to going anywhere soon.

If you aren’t familiar with the term Dermaplaning, you may have heard of face shaving or something similar.  As a woman looking to better her appearance, shaving may sound intimidating or just down right crazy.  Rest assured this treatment doesn’t require a can of shaving cream and a straight razor.  It is anything but a shave and go treatment.

banner-dermaplaning          Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation similar to microdermabrasion.  The “shaving” of the face triggers the process of cell regeneration and helps improve the appearance of hyper pigmentation or acne scarring.  By shaving the skin’s surface, the top layer of dead skin is removed as well as fine vellus hair (aka peach fuzz).  The result is a smoother appearance and a radiant glow which allows products to better absorb into the skin and makeup to apply and set more evenly.

The Dermaplaning procedure requires the use of a sterile scalpel (not nearly as scary as it sounds).  It uses a special technique, a skilled approach and gentle scraping to resurface the skin.  The treatment is actually quite relaxing.  The blade is used on clean dry skin and addresses the forehead, cheeks, chin, nose, and neck.

Who should consider this treatment?  Anyone who is interested in a quick, painless, and extremely beneficial exfoliating experience.  Dermaplaning is safe for pregnant or nursing women who may be unable to do chemical peels or other treatments.  It is effective for those with extremely rough or dry skin and also for older clients with mature skin who have a buildup of dead cells.  This tends to happen as cellular turnover  slows down as we age.

The treatment is recommended every three to four weeks.  Because we are always shedding skin cells, this is one of the procedures that can you can’t do too much.  If you are working with an aesthetician, they should be able to get you onto a regular schedule but the goal is to treat monthly so that you are removing two to three weeks worth of dead skin cells at each appointment.

Dermaplaning is the perfect procedure to combine alongside another.  Peels and serums are more easily absorbed into the skin after Dermaplaning and as a result are more effective.

So just to recap… What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?
