Microneedling is a technique that has been safely used for years on clients of all different skin types. Over the years, there have been different versions of this treatment ranging from at home versions to in office. Because the beauty industry is always evolving, it was only a matter of time before the microneedling concept advanced and that it has. Introducing SkinPen, taking microneedling a step further. SkinPen is a medical grade microneedling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and scars on both the face and body. The SkinPen device uses tiny stainless steel needles to create what are called micro injuries to the skin. While derma pens have been quite effective for microneedling, SkinPen allows different treatment depths for different issues, customizing the treatments for each individual patient.
Shallow Depth treats fine lines, pores, texture, minor scarring and improves crepe skin.
Medium Depth treats fine lines, scarring, mild stretch marks and enables deeper penetrations of solutions.
Deeper Depths treat deeper acne scars, surgical and traumatic scars, stretch marks, deeper wrinkles, pores texture and enables the deepest penetration of solutions.
One might ask why anyone would intentionally create injuries to the skin, especially when it comes to the face. The body is a miraculous thing and when it is wounded, works quickly to repair itself. The SkinPen needles make small punctures in the dermis and as the body works to repair itself, it stimulates the skin’s natural ability to produce new collagen and elastin for healthier and younger looking skin.
There are three phases to the repair process –
* Phase 1: Inflammation
By piercing the skin, the immune system is triggered to disinfect the wound, increase blood flow, and begin the process of creating new tissue.
* Phase 2: Proliferation
The existing wound or wounds are rebuilt with new cells as well as collagen and elastin which are part of the extracellular matrix. In addition, a new network of blood cells is developed.
* Phase 3: Remodeling
The wound is replaced with new blood vessels and dermal tissues. The collagen in the newly formed tissue is replaced with a stronger collagen which can contract to create a tightening on the skin.
Clients often hear the words needles and puncture and decide that this treatment is definitely not for them. So what should one expect? For the procedure, a numbing cream is placed on the face 15-30 minutes prior to the treatment. Most clients report little if any pain and some note a mild stinging sensation that is tolerable. When asked to rate the pain of SkinPen on a scale from 1-10, most clients stated a 1-2 and said that without a doubt, they would do the treatment again. This in office procedure is simple, yet so effective; clients come back time and time again to reap the benefits. The SkinPen is particularly effective for rejuvenating aging skin and is making its mark as the latest trend in age reversal.
Additional benefits to SkinPen are-
– Improves fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyper pigmentation, stretch marks and skin texture
– Minimally invasive procedure and no-ablative treatment
– Minimal downtime
– Effective for all skin types, both light and dark
– In office procedure that is quick and simple

SkinPen microneedling healing times vary, depending on each individual patient. It is not recommended to schedule the procedure around important events. Most clients return to work the next day and can expect mild to moderate redness, similar to a sunburn. The skin may feel slightly tight or warm. Most patients make a full recovery within 24 hours, though some experience dryness and slight flaking in addition to the redness. Patients should avoid exercise and sun exposure for 3 days after the treatment and should not exfoliate for 2 weeks.
No skin enhancement is permanent, including microneedling. SkinPen is a gentle treatment designed for incremental results. Even when desired results are achieved, the skin continues to age which is why maintenance is not only encouraged, it is necessary.
Patients will typically see improvement after only one treatment, though a series of treatments is typically recommended. If you are just wanting to brighten an already healthy completion, you may benefit from a single treatment. If you are treating pre-existing damage, you may need 3-6 treatments spaced about a month apart. A knowledgable treating provider will be able to assess the damage and determine how many sessions you may need.
