Botox – No Longer Just for Women

It seems that since the beginning of time, women have been held to a higher standard than men when it came to aging.  It appears that times are finally changing. When it comes to fine lines, wrinkles, and overall aging, more men than ever before are opting for Botox injections.

According to a recent study released from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of men getting injections totaled 453,281in 2016. In 2015, a similar study stated that the amount of men receiving Botox injections increased by 337 percent since 2000. That number continues to climb.

When it comes to minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, there is only so much one can do.  You can eat clean, exercise regularly, and use the very best products on the market but age (even though we don’t want it to) has a way of catching up with us. Men, even young ones, are finally seeing the limits of diet and exercise and are jumping on the Botox bandwagon.

So why are so many men turning to wrinkle relaxers? For starters, many cannot afford to take the required downtime that comes with with invasive procedures. At the same time, Botox is subtle enough that while many might notice the natural results, few if any will know that anything was actually done.  Perhaps the biggest perk is that it takes only a matter of minutes. The injection process can be done on one’s lunch break with zero evidence it had been done upon their return.

The Huffington Post reached out to five plastic surgeons based anywhere from Los Angeles to New York to ask about the men that are receiving Botox and the reasons why they are choosing it. All of the surgeons agreed that the majority of men visiting their practices are typically 35-65 years old.  Oftentimes they are professionals in the business, law, fashion, or art world with higher incomes. Many of these men feel the pressure to look and feel more youthful and because they work in competitive fields, they choose the procedure to stay in the market and compete. It was also stated that it is impossible to pinpoint a certain type of man that receives Botox. There isn’t one demographic, all skin types and ethnicities are candidates.

Skeptical men everywhere might assume that actors such as Simon Cowell and Todd Christly are receiving Botox injections on a regular basis.  The same skeptics might be surprised to hear that athletes such as Deion Sanders has been treated with Botox cosmetic. He stated “Turning 50 prompted me to take an honest look in  the mirror and when I did, I noticed lines between my brows and in the corners of my eyes.” He went on to say “If I was going to do this, I was going to invest in a brand that doctors have trusted for years.” The brand he was talking about of course, was Botox, which was created by Allergen.

If a Pro Football Hall of Famer is open to tackling his frown lines and crow’s feet,  the “it’s not very manly” excuse is no longer a valid argument. The stigma may still exist but it is becoming more accepting of men caring about their appearance. That’s right, not only is men trying to look more youthful no longer taboo, it’s actually the new norm! It’s so common these days that it’s even been given a catchy name… Brotox!

It is important for male clients who are considering Botox injections to select a doctor who’s experienced with male patients. Because there are significant differences in the outcome of injectables between women and men, they need to find someone who takes into account each client’s muscle mass.  Although exact dosing regimens do not yet exist, it is generally agreed upon that men require higher doses of Botox than women.
