Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. When old skin cells pile up on the skin’s surface, pores become clogged and we lose our healthy glow. This can lead to acne, blackheads, and enlarged pores. In addition, exfoliation gets rid of pigmented skin and dry skin. When dead skin cells are removed, products are able to penetrate more deeply, which makes them more effective. Exfoliation can also be anti-aging since our body is slower to shed dead skin cells and generate new skin cells as we get older.
There are two types on exfoliation: chemical and physical. A chemical exfoliation occurs with the use of acids, such as glycolic acid and/or various enzymes. (Note: Dermani’s customizable chemical peels are an excellent choice for a chemical exfoliation). A physical exfoliation occurs with the use of sponges, scrubs, and brushes. Come into dermani MEDSPA® for microdermabrasion, a service that uses tiny exfoliating crystals to buff away dead skin cells.
How often should you exfoliate? We recommend exfoliating about 1 to 3 times a week to keep your skin healthy in between spa treatments. Be careful not to exfoliate too much as it can remove your skin’s protective barrier and cause red, irritated skin.
Products, products, products! In order to exfoliate 1 to 3 times a week, you’re going to need some reliable products, such as our Image Skincare products. We have the Ageless Total Resurfacing Masque that contains alpha hydroxy acids and micro crystals to exfoliate the skin. You can do a full body exfoliation with our Rejuvenating Body Lotion from our Body Spa line. Our Ageless line has crèmes that contain retinol, which exfoliates the skin and improves collagen production.
Takeaway: If you want glowing skin, exfoliation is a must!
