Juvaderm: Changing the Face of Aging

While signs of aging are inevitable (especially in the face),  we are lucky to live at a time where there are solutions to this “age old” problem.  We see beautiful celebrities, models, and musicians and chalk their good looks up to genes but this is not always the case.  There is a way to tackle the ares that age us the fastest so that they don’t become too prominent.

As we age, our faces naturally lose their volume and “baby fat”.   While that may sound like a good thing, the thinner our faces are, the more fine lines and wrinkles stand out.  Juvaderm is a collection of fillers that address a multitude of concerns.  Whether it be lifting the cheekbones, concealing lines around your mouth or plumping lips, Juvaderm has a product for you.

Because there are several members of the Juvaderm family and it can be difficult to determine which product is best for you:

  • Juvaderm Ultra and Ultra Plus XC reduce moderate to severe marionette lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It can also be used to plump the lips
  • Juvaderm Volume XC is designed to lift and define the cheekbones.
  • Juvaderm Vollure XC is designed to add fullness and plump thin lips.
  • Juvaderm Volbella XC adds subtle volume to the lips and also tackles vertical lip lines.

Some other commonly asked questions:

  • Will there be bruising or swelling?
    • Juvaderm injections usually result in mild bruising and or swelling.  While this is temporary, it can last up to two weeks.  The good news is that there are ways to reduce it.  Before your treatment, it is important to avoid aspirin, fish oils, alcohol and any of the “G” supplements (garlic, ginkgo biloba,  and ginseng).
  • Is Juvaderm safe?
    • Yes.  Juvaderm is incredibly safe.  It is an FDA approved hyaluronic acid that has a proven track record for safety.  It has been used in practices for years and continues to be clinically tested to guarantee optimal safety and results for patients.
  • What if the results of Juvaderm are not what I expected?
    • Rest assured, there is an “undo” button.  Juvaderm can be dissolved with an injection of hyaluronidase.  It speeds up the natural breakdown of the hyaluronic acid which is what Juvaderm consists of.  It is important to wait two weeks after the procedure before deciding to dissolve the Juvaderm.  It can take up to two weeks to settle and even out properly and often patients who are unhappy the first week after injections find that they are happy with the end results.
  • Will there be downtime?
    • Juvaderm is a minimally invasive procedure but you should expect a little downtime afterwards.  It is important to avoid exercise for 2-3 days after treatment to minimize swelling.  While most have incredibly mild swelling or bruising, each patient reacts differently so it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Juvaderm is not recommended any less than two weeks before an event.
  • How long will Juvaderm last?
    • The effects of Juvaderm vary with each patient because we all metabolize the product differently.   There are many variables such as the area that was injected, the amount of product used, and again how quickly one metabolizes the product but Juvaderm typically lasts six months to a year.
  • Does it hurt?
    • Injections can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the area that is being treated.  Anesthesia is not necessary but some physicians may apply a topical anesthetic to make you more comfortable.  Juvaderm also has a numbing agent in the product to minimize discomfort.  As with any procedure involving needles, the initial stick is the worst part.  After that, it’s smooth sailing.
  • What does it cost?
    • There are several factors in determining the price of cosmetic injectables.  The price of the Juvaderm varies by which product you use (Voluma is the most expensive but lasts longer)  as well as how many syringes you may need.  Of course different practices charge differently but Juvaderm can range anywhere from $300 to over a $1000.  Keep in mind that cheapest is not always better.  This is your face we are talking about!  Do your homework and choose a reputable provider who also has a good price point.

Juvaderm injections should only be administered by a licensed health care provider and it is important to be honest about your medical background prior to treatment for safety reasons. While the product is incredibly safe, there are a handful of patients who aren’t good candidates.  Juvaderm should not be used in patients with severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis.  Those who have a history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins or lidocaine should also avoid receiving Juvaderm.
