IPL Treatment for Hyperpigmentation: What It Is, Who It’s For, and How It Works

What Is IPL Treatment?

Intense Pulsed Light, more commonly known as IPL photofacial, is a popular hyperpigmentation treatment targeting dark spots, redness, and visible blood vessels. At dermani MEDSPA®, all laser professionals are skilled and trained in IPL, ensuring safe and effective treatments for our clients.

How IPL Works

IPL uses high-intensity light to penetrate the skin’s upper layers. The heat generated by the light breaks apart pigment, which then rises to the surface and “peppers” off. This process reduces hyperpigmentation, redness, and vascular redness. Regular treatments can even stimulate collagen production for smoother skin.

What Skin Types Are Best for IPL?

IPL is most effective for skin types 1-3 with concerns such as sun damage, age spots, or redness. However, it’s not recommended for individuals with darker skin, a history of seizures, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The IPL Treatment Process at dermani MEDSPA®

Before treatment, a consultation ensures you’re a good candidate for IPL and allows the laser practitioner to assess your specific skin concerns and goals. This is an important step to customize the treatment plan, ensuring optimal results while prioritizing safety. During the session, the IPL device delivers controlled bursts of high-intensity light to target problem areas, effectively breaking down pigment and addressing redness or visible blood vessels. While the treatment is generally quick, some clients report mild discomfort, often described as the sensation of a rubber band snapping against the skin. To minimize any post-treatment irritation, the session concludes with the application of soothing aloe vera gel, which calms the skin, and a layer of SPF to protect the treated area from harmful UV rays. Proper post-treatment care, including diligent use of sunscreen, is essential to maintain and enhance the results of your IPL treatment.

Safety Precautions for IPL

To prepare for IPL, it’s essential to avoid sunburns and prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks prior to your appointment, as this can increase the risk of adverse reactions. Refrain from using retinol or any strong exfoliants for 72 hours before the session, as these can make the skin more sensitive to the laser. Additionally, ensure you are not on any antibiotics or photosensitizing medications within 10 days before your treatment.
